The cash cow for Star Wars has recently been merchandise. As profitable as the movies are, the real money these days is made off merchandise. However, what blows even replicas of ships out of the water is an actual prop ship from one of the movies, the older the better. Something that sounds like it would be worth a lot is something out of the movie currently known as A New Hope.

When Oscar-nominated visual effects artist Greg Jein passed on in May of last year, a friend of his who was cleaning out Greg’s garage in November found one of the four X-Wing models used in the film. Greg’s friend claim that they have no clue how he came into possession of the prop. This model ‘portrayed’ 3 different ships in the movie, including the one piloted by Luke Skywalker in the trench run of the Battle of Yavin at the end of the movie.

The model, which sold for $3.13 million over the weekend, and is now the most expensive Star Wars prop ever sold, has passed the previous record holder. The previous champion was also an X-Wing, which sold for $2.375 million.

Greg Jein was 76 and also worked on Close Encounters of The Third Kind.
