'Star Wars' Fanfiction 'Ships We Didn't See Coming

Star Wars fans don’t always agree with filmmakers and come up with their own couples. These become ‘head-canon’ whether there is any basis for it in the films or not. Everyone has heard about the Reylos and Finnpoes, but there are several unlikely or bizarre pairings ‘shipped by Star Wars fans, who have turned them into fanfiction and art. Here they are, ranked, using the number of tags from the popular fanfiction site Archive of Our Own (AO3).

 7. Rose Tico And Armitage Hux – 1414 AO3 Tags

The Gingerrose fandom emerged in 2018 after a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray version of Star Wars: The Last Jedi showed Rose biting Hux’s finger. Tumblr and X both have Gingerrose hubs where fans of the pairing get together and exchange fanart as well as stories. Believe it or not, it’s the most popular Rose pairing on AO3, more popular than Rose/Finn, with only 1247 tags.

 6. Commander Cody CC-2224 And Obi-Wan Kenobi 2197 AO3 Tags

The shipping fandom comically named Codywan. There are a few problems with this couple. Commander Cody is actually only 13 during Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, but his accelerated aging makes him look closer in age to the Jedi. Commander Cody also attacks Obi-Wan under Order 66, but that’s never stopped Tumblr and AO3 before, it only gives them more ammo for the angst/fluff hashtags. At least these two are both alive and do know each other, unlike some in this list.

 5. Din Djarin And Luke Skywalker 2945 AO3 Tags

After season two of The Mandalorian, a running joke started about Din Djarin and Skywalker raising Grogu together. It’s turned into a monster. Finn even features in some of them as a second child. It doesn’t matter that Luke and Din Djarin have only met briefly and that they barely spoke. DinLuke is now the biggest pairing for both characters on AO3. This is what happens when you take Mara Jade out of the canon.

 4. Ahsoka Tano And Anakin Skywalker – 3502 AO3 Tags

This one is a little creepy because Ahsoka is only fourteen at the time of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, even though she’s only five years Anakin’s junior. And that period seems to be when most of the fics are set. Despite Anakin having his hands full with another toxic relationship, the fandom still loves Anisoka. After Ahsoka, and Hayden Christensen’s return to Star Wars, this ship is likely to grow.

 3. Obi-Wan Kenobi And Qui-Gon Jinn 3658 AO3 Tags

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon

Obi-Wan’s canonical love interest Duchess Satine doesn’t get a look in on AO3, his former master and his apprentice rank higher. This might be due to the large amount of LGBTQ writers on the platform, or the large amount of die-hard Star Wars fans who still flatly refuse to watch the animations. This fandom is named Qui-Gon Bi.

 2. Obi-Wan Kenobi And Anakin Skywalker 9448 AO3 Tags

There’s a sixteen-year age gap between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan, and the pair frequently refer to each other as ‘brother’, which makes all the fanfiction very jarring. Obikin fanfictions can be very angsty due to Anakin’s dark path, but there’s a fair number set in alternative universes (AU) and real-world locations such as coffee shops and high schools. Many of the fanfictions stray into the Omegaverse, an alpha/beta/omega dynamic that we advise you not to look up unless you have a strong constitution, are over the age of 18, and have a therapist on speed dial.

 1. Armitage Hux And Kylo Ren – 12163 AO3 Tags

One of the biggest ships in Star Wars is known as Kylux. Some of this fandom is cute and fluffy, with this LGBTQ pairing finding love and comfort in each other. But large parts of it jump into the Omegaverse. Kylux has also expanded into AU versions of these characters where other parts that the actors have played also partner up. Kylux has a strong showing on Tumblr and X. Most of the stories around this pair have an enemies-to-lovers dynamic, whether they are on the fluff or the slash side of the fandom. E2L is like catnip to a fanfiction writer which is why, despite having to compete with the almighty Reylos, Kylux is still going strong. There are an additional 8,818 tags for Ben Solo.
