Hayden Christensen attended FAN Expo New Orleans on January 9th, where the actor shared previously unknown facts about his experiences while filming the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Christensen portrayed Anakin Skywalker in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, as well as Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Hayden has always been open about his experiences while working under George Lucas. At FAN Expo, Christensen revealed that one of Lucas’s many famous friends, Robert De Niro, visited the set while the filming of Revenge of the Sith was underway. Christensen recalled his and Ewan McGregor’s excitement about De Niro’s visit, and said, “I remember standing with Ewan and Ewan’s like, ‘Is that Robert DeNiro?’ So we’re excited he’s there, and then he walked over, and he was very friendly. I remember I would do a lot of push-ups before each take to get my heart rate up and a little exhaustion going, and he said, ‘You know, I see you doing push-ups before the takes. I do that too.’ That felt good.”

Christensen also revealed that he improvised a poignant moment in a scene at the Jedi Temple for Revenge of the Sith. Anakin is shown wallowing in the depths of his despair when a tear falls down his cheek. According to the actor, “The tear was not a scripted, planned thing,” Christensen stated. “That just kind of came out. George was like, ‘I like that. Let’s keep that.’”Christensen also shared that he accidentally cut Ian McDiarmid when he “got a little too close to him and I ended up cutting him right in the forehead, right between the eyes,” and referred to it as a “Very very gnarly place to hit.” He also confirms that he’s seen every single prequel meme and loves them as much as fans. Much to the shock and disappointment of fans, Hayden confessed that he wore a wig in Episode III, and Anakin’s longer locks did not belong to him. He even kept one of those wigs!

The actor also explained that, above all, he enjoyed enacting Anakin’s slow descent into darkness and prefers the grim moments in the trilogy where Anakin loses more of his innocence and light. He explained, “There are very specific moments in Episode II and III where you see that innocence taken away from him. Like when his mother dies, and that shot of him carrying his mother in his arms. There’s just a lot going on in Anakin’s head at that moment. Or in Episode III, when he goes and talks to Yoda and tells Yoda about his concerns and is asking for advice, and Yoda’s just like, ‘Tough luck, kid.’” Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin again in Ahsoka Season 2, which premieres later this year on Disney+.
