The gaming industry is still reeling from the aftermath of two of the most decisive, divisive, and explosive decisions in recent memory. First was the decision by Sony to end disc production by January 2028, drawing the swift ire of gamers the world over, followed by XBOX’s dreaded axing of 3,200 employees and removal of nearly five studios. Among those affected by the layoffs appears to be one of the most beloved studios under their umbrella: Obsidian Entertainment.

Obsidian lost about a quarter of it’s staff in the layoffs, totaling between 60-70 employees. Asha Sharma, the new head of XBOX, ironically, is also pushing for a stricter focus on the established IPs of the gaming giant, and that includes Fallout. Reportedly, to do this, Obsidian is scrapping development of a sequel to one of it’s most recently published games: Avowed. The remaining employees will shift focus instead to either continuing support for Grounded 2, and just released DLC for The Outer Worlds 2, and a just-revealed Fallout game.

This new Fallout game will be headed by Josh Sawyer. Sawyer was lead designer and project director on one of the most beloved Fallout games, New Vegas. At the time of this news, he was reportedly working on a game structurally similar to Fallout before being pulled from that and put on this directive. Given how popular Fallout: New Vegas is, and the TV show’s success, it gives a glimmer of hope to fans in this depressing time in the industry that a sequel or follow up to New Vegas could be in the work.
