Pac-Man Will Make A Comeback With A New Live-Action Movie From Wayfarer And Bandai Namco

Pac-Man and Ghosts

Despite being usually crushed by critics and more often than not no or at best a moderate financial success movie adaptations of video games are still a trend in Hollywood. Some games with an immersive story like The Last of Us, Halo, or Uncharted lend themselves better to being put on the big screen, while others, well, not so much.

Falling into the latter category is Pac-Man, which was released in the US in 1980 and quickly became one of the most defining video games of that decade, spanning countless sequels and an onslaught of merchandise.

The idea of making a feature-length movie about a little yellow disk, that constantly moves through mazes, and devours little white dots, while trying not to be caught by colorful ghosts surely is a bit “out there”, still it seems that this is exactly what is going to happen. Well, probably not exactly that…

Bandai Namco Entertainment, the company behind Pac-Man recently announced its plans for a live-action Pac-Man movie that it will produce together with Wayfarer Studios and Lightbeam Entertainment. At this current time, not much else is known about this project, other than it is based on an idea by Chuck Williams (Sonic the Hedgehog) and will be produced by Justin Baldoni, Manu Gargi, and Andrew Calof.

While a fully-fledged live-action Pac-Man adaptation will be a premiere, there have already been two TV series featuring the titular hero: between 1982 and 1983 Hanna-Barbera created an animated series called simply Pac-Man, that ran for 44 episodes, and between 2013 and 2015 Disney XD produced a 52 episodes long series called Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. And of course, Pac-Man has been heavily featured in Adam Sandler’s Pixels.
