In cinema, there are some roles that are daunting for their grandiosity, and others for their intensity. In the world of fandom and geekdom, there are roles that are daunting just because they are so iconic. Whether it be wearing the red, blue, or yellow shirts of Star Trek or swinging a lightsaber in Star Wars, there are some roles that make geeky actors giddy. According to The Mandalorian star, Pedro Pascal, donning these outfits is not without its drawbacks.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Pascal said that while his iconic Mandalorian armor has a great aesthetic, its practicality is nothing to write home about:

“It’s like putting on a head-to-toe glove with weights on it.”

Anyone who has donned a full-body costume, whether it be for a film, LARP-ing, or cosplay, can tell you that any full-body suit takes its toll after a while. As one can also imagine, wearing a suit for fun and role-playing is quite different from wearing a suit every day for a job, especially a job as demanding as filming.

In addition to the Mandalorian armor being uncomfortable, Pascal humorously noted that the helmet has its issues too:

“[Y]ou can’t see sh*t!...Your breath completely fogs up the narrow slit that you can see through. There’s no peripheral vision. If there’s a hole, I’m gonna fall into it.”

Mandalorian armor look? Awesome. Practicality? Not so much.

There is no shortage of complaints about actors in pop culture costumes. Mark Hamill complained about being blind in the stormtrooper helmet, and Hayden Christenson described not being able to relieve himself in the Darth Vader suit. Grant Gustin once joked about how his Flash suit “smells,” and Christian Bale said that he nearly quit Batman Begins because the Batsuit would give him panic attacks.

Pedro Pascal also noted that the Mandalorian armor has “improved over time,” and credited The Mandalorian production crew with “finessing and make [the armor] more comfortable” as the show goes on. It also makes him feel “powerful, protected and dangerous, and like a protector.”

Fans will see Pascal don his iconic Mandalorian armor once again in The Mandalorian's third season, which premieres March 1st, 2023 on Disney+. Fans can also catch him as Joel on The Last of Us, streaming now on HBO Max.
