While Star Trek on the big screen and even the small screen are in an uncertain place despite the franchise’s 60th Anniversary, with Starfleet Academy ending after two seasons and Star Trek film plans largely unspoken, the publishing side of the franchise has been strong throughout 2026. With multiple announcements and the publication of various comics, a new story was recently revealed to be boldly going into a new arena for the sci-fi IP.
Titled Stargazers: A Star Trek Story, this vertical webcomic exclusive to WEBTOON was written by Jarrett Melendez, and focuses on four characters on the space station Deep Space Nine. Set between the end of Deep Space Nine (the show) and the beginning of Picard, the comic takes place during a period of calm, without the same darkness that DS9 often featured in its gritty wartime tales later in the show’s run.
While interviewing the author, Syfy learned more about the story, which explores the lives of civilian youths aboard the space station, with the comic’s main character being Leon and an LGBTQIA2S+ romance in the cards. There are still “bad actors” on the station, and the plucky teens will have to discover what is happening. The series will also feature several easter eggs and allow for further exploration of the Promenade, the commercial heart of the space station.
The story is currently available to read exclusively via WEBTOON now!
