Sonic Frontiers, the latest title in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, has been getting mostly positive reception, which indicates the direction future Sonic games will be going. In fact, Morio Kishimoto, the director of the title, has been giving fans exciting information on the franchise’s future and even on the development of Sonic Frontiers. Kishimoto has hinted that the next Sonic title might drop the boost in favor of making the gameplay more like the Sonic Adventure titles. The boost also almost was not in Sonic Frontiers at all.

Kishimoto has recently been rather active on Twitter, answering various questions regarding the franchise and the development of Sonic Frontiers. He was asked about the boost mechanic and the spin dash in two tweets.

The first question roughly translates as follows:

“I would like to ask you two questions. Is there anything you would like to change or add to the boost gameplay in future 3D Sonic games? Also, what’s your favorite Frontiers giant boss theme? I can’t speak Japanese, so I’m sorry if the translation is bad.”

Kishimoto’s response in English is roughly translated as follows:

”When I started working on this game, I thought a lot about whether or not it would be possible, and decided to hire Boost. I’m still thinking of trying a Sonic game that doesn’t use boosts in my next game. My favorite giant bosses are the first and second ones.”

The director’s response to the second question is as follows:

“Of course I understand the benefits of boost. Please be assured that we will also experiment with the coexistence of boost and spin dash. However, I also have a feeling that I want to challenge the level design without boosts like the ADV series. After all, the ADV series is a legend.”

Nothing seems to be set in stone, as these seem to be musings of Kishimoto. However, it reveals that the team is open to experimenting with the format and is looking toward Sonic Adventure for inspiration. Whatever the case, Sonic Frontiers most certainly seems to be the direction the franchise will be going in.
