Star Wars is all about trilogies, and on September 15, the second book of the Reign of Fear trilogy will be released. Following Alexander Freed’s Mask of Fear, which came out last year, its sequel, Edge of the Abyss, is written by Rebecca Roanhorse. The author previously contributed to the Star Wars universe with her novel Resistance Reborn (2019) and the short story Dark Vengeance (2020).

While Mask of Fear takes place shortly after the declaration of the Galactic Empire, Edge of the Abyss makes a significant time jump and is set just one year before the events of the first season of Andor.

By this point, the Empire has established a firm grip on the galaxy and has begun indoctrinating the next generation of citizens with its propaganda. Among those affected are the daughters of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma: Leia and Leida.

The two senators once again serve as the main characters of Edge of the Abyss. Joining them from the first book is Saw Gerrera, the leader of one of the many small rebel cells beginning to emerge across the galaxy. When one of his partisans is captured by the Empire, there is a serious risk that the prisoner might reveal secrets that could allow the tyrannical regime to crush the growing resistance.

In addition to these three central characters, Edge of the Abyss also features Anto Kreegyr (who first appeared in season one of Andor as the leader of another rebel cell), Luthen Rael, Kleya Marki, Perrin Fertha (Mon Mothma’s estranged husband), Leida Mothma, and Nisus Osar, one of the Imperials responsible for planning anti-Ghorman propaganda in season two of Andor.

Speaking of Ghorman, some events in Edge of the Abyss will take place on this planet, where a group of idealistic students begins plotting against the Empire, unaware that an ISB agent is hiding among them.

Overall, Edge of the Abyss portrays the state of the galaxy first introduced in Star Wars Rebels and later explored in Andor: an Empire that is becoming more brutal by the day, and a resistance that is still fractured, fragile, and often powerless — still a long way from the unified Rebel Alliance that will one day defeat the Empire.

Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss (Reign of the Empire) can now be preordered from Penguin Random House.
