The only novel by American writer and poet Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar, is getting a film adaptation. Billie Eilish has been a fan of the novel, so she joined Sarah Polley in developing the adaptation, and is also set to star in the film. The Bell Jar tells a semi-autobiographical story set in the 1950s, as a young woman descends into mental illness from the societal expectations of women in the period. Published in 1963, it was hailed as a literary classic. Plath published the novel under a pseudonym, and took her life shortly after.

Polley’s last film, Women Talking, won best adapted screenplay at the Oscars in 2023. Eilish, a known musical artist, has won Oscars for co-writing original songs featured in Barbie and No Time to Die. Joy Gorman Wettels will produce The Bell Jar, having originated the project at her production company, Joy Coalition. Production companies Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal had partnered before, also bringing Focus Features on board.

Eilish has been building up her filmography over the last few years. First by making an acting debut in the Prime Video series Swarm, which won her People’s Choice Award for TV performance of the year. She is also co-directing her upcoming concert tour documentary with James Cameron.
