Peter Jackson’s next venture into Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, is set to begin filming this summer, and Kate Winslet is currently in talks to play an undisclosed role. The film is set between Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and his The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story centers on Aragorn and Gandalf seeking out Gollum to learn more about Bilbo’s ring. Andy Serkis is directing and will reprise his role of Gollum, with Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf. Elijah Wood has strongly implied he will return as Frodo, but no official announcement is out yet. Jackson is producing this film along with another untitled movie focused on Gollum. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boya, and Zane Weiner will join as producers.
Winslet was last seen on-screen in Avatar: Fire and Ash and directed a family drama, Goodbye June, which was penned by her son Joe Anders. If Winslet lands this role, it will be her second time working with Jackson as he directed her in Heavenly Creatures. Winslet is a seven-time Oscar nominee who took home the Oscar for her work in 2009’s The Reader. She is represented by CAA and United Agents. The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to release in theaters on December 17, 2027.
