What The Next Rocksteady 'Batman' Video Game Should Be

Ever since the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, it has been hard for DC fans who also love playing video games.
Over the past couple of years, we’ve had:
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights were not the success WB and fans were hoping for.
Monolith Software’s Wonder Woman video game canned by WB Games.
Video Games based on The Flash and John Constantine pitches from WB Games Montreal were rejected by WB Games, the former due to The Flash film from 2023 being a big flop.
Despite all of the drama and cancellations, DC Studios and WB Games are still doing more DC video game adaptations, which include the newly announced Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and some set in James Gunn’s DCU.
Another DC video game currently in development is a new Batman video game from Rocksteady Studios.
Details for the project are currently scarce, aside from rumors that it will be a Batman Beyond video game or, at the very least, a revival of the Batman Beyond-inspired project previously developed by WB Games Montreal. It has also been reported that Bill Money, who was a game director for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and a Design Director for Batman: Arkham Origins, is a new game director for Rocksteady Studios.
While it’s easy to feel annoyed that there will be another Batman video game, despite many fans wanting a new and good Superman video game, I do see some potential in Rocksteady’s new Batman game.
I’ll be talking about three things on what the next Batman video game from Rocksteady should be.

A Batman Beyond Video Game

This one is a no-brainer when you really think about it.
Batman Beyond was an old animated series following the adventures of Terry McGinnis, the new Batman, with the help of an older Bruce Wayne, facing off against all kinds of criminals and monsters in a futuristic Gotham City called Neo-Gotham.
Ever since the show’s cancellation, it is still loved by many fans to this day and has spawned numerous comic books, an animated direct-to-video film, and even an animated short movie.
However, Batman Beyond is also ripe for a video game adaptation, especially since the only one it got was an adaptation of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker back in the early 2000s.
Imagine a Batman Beyond video game with today’s graphics and the fight/stealth mechanics from the Batman: Arkham franchise. It would be incredible.
Another reason for a new Batman Beyond video game is that it would be something fresh and new when it comes to Batman video games. We’ve seen countless Batman video games where you play as Bruce Wayne beating up bad guys, but imagine playing as a new Batman who is also a teenager trying to be a better person.
It’s also worth bringing up that a video game like Cyberpunk 2077 shows that you can make a Batman video game featuring a beautiful-looking futuristic setting.
A Batman: Arkham Reboot

I know Camouflaje is working on another Batman: Arkham installment, at least that’s what Mark Rolston claims.
However, if Rocksteady wants to take another swing at the Batman: Arkham franchise, I wouldn’t mind seeing them take inspiration from 2018’s God of War. Specifically, a reboot that also serves as a sequel to Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but you don’t need to play the older titles to understand the story.
A reboot can also lead to a “Back to basics approach”, like having the game focus on Batman facing off against villains in a setting like Arkham Asylum or Arkham City. Not too big, but big enough to explore and discover cool easter eggs.
Also, a reboot can be a good opportunity for Rocksteady to use characters that never appeared in the franchise or as cameos, like Prometheus or Cassandra Cain.
Set In Its Own Universe

If Rocksteady wants to do more Batman video games, but set in its own continuity, I’m also down with that.
Telltale’s Batman video games showed that you can make a Batman video game set in its own universe/timeline while doing something new and fresh.
Going back to what I said about a Batman Beyond video game or even a possible revival of the Damian Wayne game, Rocksteady could have those kinds of video games take place in its own universe, so they can also have more people play them without dealing with the baggage of continuity.
I’m OK with Camouflaje or even WB Games Montreal continuing to do stuff with the Batman: Arkham universe, while Rocksteady does their own thing with their Batman video game.
Who knows what the future holds for Rocksteady or even future DC video games? I do hope whatever happens to Rocksteady, they can knock it out of the park with their next project, even if it’s another Batman video game, after the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. After all, if Konami can have Bloober Team make an excellent remake of Silent Hill 2 after the Silent Hill franchise went down in quality after the release of Silent Hill 4: The Room, I can see Rocksteady making a good comeback.
