Warwick Davis is the latest to receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE). The award is a recognition of his service to drama, his charity work, and his advocacy for those with dwarfism. Davis received the award at Windsor Castle and commented on the lovely gesture of the Prince of Wales kneeling down to be on Davis’ level. Davis launched a fruitful acting career in part due to his grandmother. Davis explained, “At 11 I was a massive fan of Star Wars and she heard an announcement from Lucasfilm that they were looking for short people to be in [Return of the Jedi] and, yeah, that was my journey into that galaxy far, far away.” He entered that galaxy in the role of Wicket the Ewok. He later played the pod race spectator Weazel and starred as the titular character in Willow.
Davis was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a rare form of dwarfism. This condition would eventually lead him to the path of advocacy. He said, “Probably about 10 years ago, I founded Little People UK with my wife Sam. It’s a really wonderful thing to see people come together who only have one thing in common, share stories, share worries, share woes, and share happiness. Someone with dwarfism is exactly the same as anyone else, except they’re in a smaller body. They have the same dreams, same goals, same desire for love and happiness.” The Prince, outing himself as a Star Wars fan, claimed Davis should have received this award years ago.
