Netflix has confirmed that the internet hit KPop Demon Hunters will be getting a sequel, and that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to direct it. The sequel will be their first project in the exclusive multi-year deal they signed with Netflix for writing and directing animated projects. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the sequel, with the aim to release in 2029.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix Chief Content Officer, said of the announcement, “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres. We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”
KPop Demon Hunters focuses on the KPop band HUNTR/X, who are both music superstars and demon hunters. When a demonic boy band rises to oppose them, the three hunters must deal with their largest challenge yet. Releasing in 2025, it became Netflix’s most watched movie of all time. The movie’s original soundtrack dominated music charts across the summer.
Kang reflected on that success while looking to the future, saying, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
Appelhans added to that with, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve – and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
