Ian McKellen Talks About Andy Serkis's 'The Hunt For Gollum' Movie

It is the return of the kings! Ian McKellen has confirmed that Gandalf and Frodo will be back for the upcoming movie The Hunt for Gollum. Little is currently known about the project aside from the fact that this will take place during the events of the original trilogy of films, as Gollum is tracked down to be interrogated about the One Ring to rule them all. Ian McKellen took part in an LOTR panel at London’s For Love of Fantasy event, where he broke the news.

Speaking to the crowd, he said, “I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum and it’s all about Gollum… I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!” While he confirmed the return of those characters, it is interesting to note that he did not confirm whether or not he and Elijah Wood will be playing them. So far, the only original trilogy actor confirmed is Andy Serkis, who will return as Gollum and direct the film. Peter Jackson will also return as a producer.

Warner Bros. has been returning to its hit franchises lately. Harry Potter is seeing itself rebooted as a series, and The Lord of the Rings has already had a new animated installment, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. If Ian McKellen were to return to the role of Gandalf, it would see the return of two of his most iconic characters in a short span, as he is set to portray Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday. Whether or not he’ll return will have to wait for confirmation, or until The Hunt For Gollum releases in theaters in December 2027.
