Recommended 'Green Lantern' Comics

With ‘Lanterns’ coming out soon, more people are interested in reading Green Lantern comics, especially featuring Hal Jordan or John Stewart as the main character.
I’ve decided to recommend some comics and graphic novels featuring Hal or John as the main character. I will admit that some of these will feature Hal or John working with each other or others, but they do a great job of portraying them.
These comics are in no particular order.
Green Lantern: Sector 2814 Volume 2

Even though this is Volume 2 of a three-volume run written by Len Wein and others, this is the volume where John Stewart is an active Green Lantern and the main character.
This volume does an excellent job of showing off John’s personal life and even how he uses the ring’s construct powers, especially since its established that he was an architect in the past. Plus, his relationship with Katma Tui is well-written, and I loved how their relationship developed.
You also don’t have to worry about reading Volume 1 because Volume 2 does explain what happened to Hal Jordan. Still, luckily, this volume has cool stuff with Hal and his relationship with Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire.

Green Lantern Vol. 3 #147

Even though this issue takes place when Kyle Rayner was the current Green Lantern, this comic has John Stewart as the main character.
In this issue, John Stewart struggles with an injury from Fatality that has caused him to be in a wheelchair. However, John is not crippled and is dealing with something else that’s making him not walk. During a therapy session, John explains to his therapist about wanting to be better than his scummy father while dealing with feeling like he’s not up to par with Hal Jordan and his own trauma.
Judd Winnick does an excellent job of exploring themes such as trauma, anxiety, and PTSD through John Stewart, and I found myself relating to him.
I highly recommend this issue, especially if you’re looking for a good comic to read that feels like a character study.
Tales Of The Green Lantern Corps #1 - #3 (1981)

For those wondering if they are any Hal Jordan or John Stewart stories where they work with the Green Lantern Corps, you’re in luck.
While fans do tend to bring up the Green Lantern Corps series that published alongside Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern run, I believe Tales from of the Green Lantern Corps by Len Wein deserves a spot on this list.
This run has what you expect from a title focusing on Hal and the Corps: Incredible action set pieces, great character development, an intense story, and cool villains that would later play a role in other DC titles, including Geoff Johns’ Brightest Day series
What I also love about this miniseries is Hal’s interactions with the other members of the Corps, including Katma Tui and Arisia. Not only do you get a good idea on who they are and what they have to struggle with, but it also highlights why Hal Jordan is an important character to the Green Lantern franchise.
Green Lantern Rebirth

No list featuring the best Hal Jordan stories would be compete if there was no mention of a Green Lantern comic written by Geoff Johns.
Green Lantern: Rebirth was not just a miniseries focusing on Hal, John, and even Guy Gardner; this was a comic series that allowed Geoff Johns to bring back the entire Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro. In the pages of Emerald Twilight and other comics set after the story, Hal Jordan went insane and turned evil after his home, Coast City, was destroyed in The Death and Return of Superman, which led to the GLC being destroyed and Sinestro dying at Hal's hands.
Green Lantern: Rebirth is an amazing story focusing on the redemption of Hal Jordan, and it kickstarted future storylines that would effect the Green Lantern franchise and the DC universe, such as The Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night.
Another cool thing I loved about this storyline was Geoff Johns’ little details when it comes to certain things, like the way Hal and his friends took down both Parallax and Sinestro, which had each Green Lantern build their constructs that highlighted their personalities against their foes.
Green Lantern Huckleberry Hound

It’s easy to laugh at this pick due to the title and premise, but believe me, this one-shot crossover has a great portrayal of John Stewart.
Mark Russell creates an interesting tale of John and Huckleberry Hound dealing with the effects of President Nixon’s time in the White House, whether it’s John dealing with racist police officers or Huckleberry Hound having to go to conventions to get money after a joke making fun of Nixon gets him blacklisted from the entertainment industry.
Going back to John’s portrayal in this comic, the comic also does a great job of showing John’s humanity, whether it’s dealing with the loss of his brother while he was serving his country or being told by Katma Tui that it’s okay to stand up for the innocent.
If you want to read a good one-shot issue that is strange but well-written, I highly recommend this one.
Those are just some reading recommendations when it comes to John Stewart and Hal Jordan. I could’ve listed more, but I thought these five stories would be good enough, especially to those wanting to read stories focusing on Hal and John.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this article and enjoy these comics.
