It has been a fantastic weekend for the box office. Collectively, the domestic revenue was around $430 million, making box office history. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) did the heavy lifting for this achievement, bringing in about $360 million domestically. Some reports have the film surpassing $1 billion worldwide, but Box Office Mojo has it at about $932 million as of August 3, 2026; it won't take long for Brand New Day (2026) to shoot past the billion-dollar mark if Monday's numbers don't do the trick. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) is still going strong into its third weekend, with about $51 million in box office, pushing the total over the $400 million mark.

Other films, including Toy Story 5 (2026) and Moana (2026), helped boost the total further, cementing the weekend as the highest-earning in box office history. This weekend beat the previous record set by the opening weekend for Avengers: Endgame (2019), the film making about $357 million alone of the $402 million overall box office revenue. While a good weekend doesn't mean that the movie theater industry is no longer struggling, it does show that things are improving since the COVID-19 lockdown, and that theaters can still be financially viable in the age of streaming.

The Odyssey (2026) is a new adaptation of the famous epic written by Homer. Set after the Trojan War, the film follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he makes a perilous journey home to his wife and son. Tom Holland is in both films as Peter Parker and Telemachus, respectively. Both films are exclusively in theaters at this time.
