'Toy Story 5' Has Massive Opening Weekend, Sets Franchise Best

Three decades after their story first hit the silver screen, Andy’s toys, now Bonnie’s toys, still have it. Making $160 million in its opening in the USA alone, Toy Story 5 earned a further $152 million overseas, meaning a worldwide opening total of $312 million dollars.
This is an impressive feat, with the domestic numbers topping this year’s previous biggest domestic debut, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, while also defeating Toy Story 4’s 120$ million domestic debut seven years ago. Toy Story 5 is now second in Pixar’s opening weekend debuts, behind The Incredibles 2’s 182.7$ million.
Such considerable success is sure to dissuade Disney’s possible concerns about future theatrical releases for animated films following some recent stumbles, particularly in association with the Toy Story brand. Lightyear, released in 2022, had lackluster financial returns and a mixed reception but seemingly had little negative impact on fans of the franchise, while Disney Animation projects like Elio saw muted financial returns and similarly mixed responses.
Next on Pixar’s slate is Gatto, an original, feline-centric film. With the success of Toy Story 5 and other animated sequels in recent years, we should expect further announcements from Pixar about additional sequels in development. A Bug’s Life 2, anyone?
