'Poetic License' Which Will Feature The Directorial Debut of Maude Apatow, Gets A Distribution With Sony

A highly anticipated directorial debut has finally found a new home! It’s officially been confirmed that Poetic License, the feature directorial debut of actress Maude Apatow, has found distribution via Sony Pictures Classics.

The film centers on Liz, a former therapist who is preparing for her children to go off to college. Out of nowhere, Liz finds herself at the center of a friendship that’s hanging on by a thread. As two boys, Sam and Ari, go after each other, Liz finds herself becoming the token of both their affection. The film stars Leslie Mann, Andrew Barth Feldman, Cooper Hoffman, Nico Parker, Maisy Stella, Method Man, and Martha Kelly. In addition to Maude Apatow acting as director, the screenplay was written by Raffi Donatich while Judd Apatow acts as producer. The film premiered at TIFF last year to positive reviews with praise toward Apatow’s direction and the performances of Mann, Feldman, and Cooper. but received some criticism for its screenplay. The film was originally set to be distributed by Row K Entertainment with a release date of May 1st 2026, until it was delayed to October 16th 2026. Due to pay disputes and Row K’s worry that the film had no real commercial potential, Poetic License was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Maude Apatow was initially known for her appearances in her father’s films, most notably Knocked Up, This Is 40, and The King of Staten of Island. She is best known for her role as Lexie Howard in the hit HBO series Euphoria. Leslie Mann is best known for her roles in The Other Woman, Blockers, The Bling Ring, and multiple films by Judd Apatow (her husband). Andrew Barth Feldman is best known for his roles in Tony-winning musicals such as Dear Evan Hansen and Maybe Happy Ending. Cooper Hoffman is a Golden Globe nominated actor (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) and is best known for his roles in Licorice Pizza, Saturday Night, and The Long Walk. Nico Parker is best known for playing Astrid in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake. Maisy Stella is best known for her role as Elliott Labrant in Megan Park’s My Old Ass. Method Man is an acclaimed rapper, best known for his work with the Wu-Tang Clan and the hip-hop duo Method Man & Redman. Martha Kelly is best known for her role as Laurie in Euphoria, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

Poetic Licence is set for release in 2027.
