'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Review

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a great new installment in the MCU. It gives us a new version of Peter Parker, one who is struggling with his new life and the toll it’s taking. The story is entertaining, the action is quite exciting, and so are the cameos of familiar faces. While it’s darker than the previous installments, it still has its funny moments.
At its core, the movie is about starting over, alone. Sometimes to do this, you must give up what and who you loved, no matter how hard it may be. Peter Parker knows this firsthand, as that is exactly what he did. He starts over with nothing, basically. No friends, family, or anyone who really knows who he is. We see the toll it takes on him, and it even starts to affect his spider DNA. When the spider DNA takes over, it’s super creepy!
As it was explored in Thunderbolts*, you are never truly alone, and Peter realizes that as the movie goes on. He eventually makes friends with Frank Castle and Sadie Sink’s character. Frank helps him because he considers him a friend, and Peter can get through to Sink’s character, which brings them closer together. Not only that, but it asks the age-old question: “Who are you?” Peter has to rediscover who he is, especially with his new life and his spider DNA going crazy. It also asks: when you truly love someone, do you let them go, or do you wait for them? I love that Marvel is exploring more serious topics with some of their movies recently.

Sadie Sink was amazing in her role and was the star of the movie for me. I don’t want to spoil who she plays, but let's just say I did say “I knew it!” out loud when it was revealed. Her character will definitely be important for later movies, and I can’t wait to see what they do with her. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle, and he was the much-needed comic relief, as silly as that sounds, with someone like The Punisher. It also gives us some great moments with MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). The three of them have amazing chemistry, and it’s great to see them reunited, even if only for a few moments. Tom Holland gives an absolutely heartbreaking performance, and there are a few times when you can see his heart actually breaking.
Brand New Day was a much darker approach to the character of Spider-Man. We see Peter really struggle to be alone, and it even takes a toll on his spider hormones. It’s a much different vibe than the previous Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. I love seeing a more grown-up Peter Parker, dealing with something quite serious, and facing the repercussions of his actions. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why he did it, but he still has to face what he did, and for him, that meant being alone. It’s my favorite out of his Spider-Man movies so far. Destin Daniel Cretton was an excellent choice to direct this, and did such a great job.

I wish I could say that this was a “fun family movie!”, but that would be a lie, because it’s anything but that. While it still has its fun moments, it is quite serious, as we see Peter Parker struggle with his new life and the toll it’s taking on him. There are absolutely heartbreaking flashback scenes, but they are so important to the movie. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out, however, because you definitely should. Just be aware that it may be a bit too relatable for some of us, but isn’t that what superhero movies should be anyway?
