Disney signed a deal with Voicemod to bring Star Wars and Marvel characters to the app. Voicemod is an AI-powered app that allows users to modify their voice. The upcoming sounds from Disney, however, will not be able to be modified. Voicemod co-founder and CEO Jaime Bosch explained to GameBeat that their customers “use those sounds to express an emotion, almost like an emoji…They use it in the same way, but on a communication via audio.” Rather than turning their voice into Grogu’s, the new characters only allow users to insert the pre-existing sounds. In a public statement, Bosch clarified, “These soundboards build on those interactions by giving users a way to bring sounds from Marvel and Star Wars into those moments, whether they’re joking with friends, reacting on stream, or creating content. The shared feelings that come from sounds people know and love generate an instant sense of belonging.”
The voices of the Mandalorian and Grogu became available on Friday at $9.99 for the standalone soundboard or $7.99 for premium subscribers. Voices of other Star Wars and Marvel characters are expected to follow. This is not Disney’s first foray into AI technology. Previously, the company struck a deal with OpenAI that would have brought select Disney characters to the Sora video platform. However, that deal fell through when OpenAI shut down Sora. Voicemod currently has an active user base of 5.7 million subscribers.
