After An Action-Filled Summer, Tom Holland's Next Role Has Him Starring In The Fred Astaire Biopic

It's official: the currently-untitled legendary dancer Fred Astaire biopic is still moving forward with Tom Holland as its star. Little is known about the film at this time, as it is in early pre-production, but Holland is the only confirmed actor. On an episode of Good Morning America, the actor teased what's next for his career (via The Hollywood Reporter): “I now feel like I’m starting this chapter where I can’t quite get away with being a teenager anymore and for me, what I love about my job is the challenges. We have Fred Astaire next…And as soon as I finish with these tours, I’m diving back into the dance studio.”
The actor is already getting to work. He explained, “I did my first few rehearsals recently. And it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud.” Holland is aiming to do all of the dancing himself: “I have a desire to use no doubles. To do all of the dancing. To shoot those dances in one shot. How he would have done it.”

Holland performed in the West End musical production Billy Elliot from 2008 to 2010, first in a supporting role and then as the titular character. In a separate interview on Live With Kelly and Mark, Holland mourned the decision to stop dancing and mentioned what he looks forward to with this new role: “One of my biggest regrets in my career is after I finished Billy Elliot, I quit dancing. To have an opportunity to get to re-explore that world that I loved so much, that I owe so much to. I’m so excited for the challenge.”
There is some controversy surrounding the creation of the biopic, as Astaire was against such an adaptation until he died in 1987; it is speculated that he was against a low-quality portrayal of his first wife, who had a speech impediment. The film will reportedly focus on the dancer's relationship with his sister, Adele Astaire, whom he frequently performed with as a brother-sister duo until her retirement in 1932. This dodges the focused portrayal of his first wife, whom he married in 1933. While the wait is on for the upcoming biopic, The Odyssey (2026) is exclusively in theaters, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
