They’re back. Hunter, Echo, Wrecker, Tech, Crosshair, and Omega return in the second season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch which premiered on Disney+ on January 4. Many viewers are caught up in the drama unfolding as the Empire strengthens its hold on the galaxy. However, even in medias res, there is still a heart to the story being told.

According to head writer and executive producer Jennifer Corbett, this season will see the Bad Batch builds their road in each episode:

“I mean, it’s all about building the road, essentially, and having everything build upon the other episodes. And it was all very intentional where we’re going in season two. But we had to make sure that we had episodes that explored some fun and we had some adventure. And also that gave us an opportunity to explore our Batch more and shine a light on Tech and Echo and Wrecker and Hunter and really sort of allow them the opportunity to grow as specific missions sort of relate to them. Whenever you deal with the Empire, it sort of becomes a big thing. So we just wanted to make sure as we were building to a bigger story, we had other episodes that were leading toward that.”

This message is echoed in the tagline for the promo poster, which was given out during Star Wars Celebration 2022: “Long Road Ahead.”

Dee Bradley Baker, the voice actor for every Bad Batch clone, explains to Entertainment Tonight’s Joe Bergren that fans should zero in on Crosshair:

“My favorite part is to follow Crosshair's journey and to really deepen that character with the trials that he is subjected to. I can't say what will happen with Crosshair, but I will say that Star Wars plays out in a moral universe. There's good and there's bad. There's consequences for the decisions that you make and there's also room for transformation and redemption…That is the optimism that is ultimately at the end of the tunnel for Star Wars.”

That right there explains the message that Corbett wants her viewers to take away from The Bad Batch:

“I think for me, it’s the idea that if you can help someone, you do it. Even though you can’t save everybody, you try to do your best. And I think that’s a hopeful message for this show and just hopefully the world in general.”

According to year-end polls conducted by the American Psychological Association, 76% of Americans feel stress over the state of the United States as a republic, and, according to the New York Times, 71% of those polled feel our democracy is under threat. Hopefully, the optimistic message of The Bad Batch will help assuage these fears and help everyone feel more encouraged about our own futures.
