The Fantastic Four: First Steps is getting off to a good start: grossing at least $24 million on Thursday, its opening day at the box office. This is good news for Marvel Studios, as its opening gross was a bit higher than Captain Marvel’s ($20.7M) and a bit away from Captain America’s ($25M). This is almost as good as the opening week of the Fox film Fan4stic ($25.6M), which was a notorious loss for the company. It’s still not as good as the Tim Story Fantastic Four movies, which grossed more than $55 million in their respective opening weeks.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the latest film incarnation of Marvel’s First Family. After an abortive attempt by Roger Corman (which may not have even been planned for release), the first major film adaptation was the Tim Story directed Fantastic Four, released by 20th Century Fox in 2005. It was followed up by Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. These films, though successful, received mixed reception among fans and critics. Fan4stic, however, would debut in 2015 to near-unanimous panning, and was commonly cited as a factor in the much-publicized Fox-Disney merger. Thankfully, First Steps looks to be avoiding its mistakes.
