News about Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney’s latest live-action prequel is coming thick and fast. Barry Jenkins, best known for his Oscar winner, Moonlight is directing. A brilliant filmmaker, but he’s not exactly known for his zany comedies, so don’t expect this movie to emulate The Lion King 1 ½  with Timon and Pumbaa.  Jenkins has cast Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) in the title role. Like James Earl Jones,

Pierre is a classically trained British actor with a commanding voice. And he’s got enough charisma on screen that he’s been cast as Malcolm X in National Geographic’s first scripted drama series Genius.

Pierre has suggested that the film will focus on Mufasa’s growth into the role of King, which has led to fans fearing that the plot will be too similar to the first film.

In an interview with Collider Forces, he said:

“When Sir James Earl Jones portrayed him, this is Mufasa in his full capacity, in his rhythm, and I think here we're exploring Mufasa prior to that point. What does this young lion look like before he is who we know him as, and he is discovering his rhythm, how he conducts himself, how he engages with his community and his loved ones? So, I think that's the key thing. It's figuring it out.”

There’s going to be immense talent on the set, including Kelvin Harrison Jr as Scar (Elvis), and returning stars Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), and John Kani (Rafiki). So if they’ve got a half-decent script, this could be Disney’s most promising live-action since Beauty and the Beast. The movie will be out in theatres on December 20th, 2024.
