Fire. Air. Water. And now, Earth.

Christmas came a few days early with news about the next show to debut in the Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra universe. According to Avatar News, Avatar Studios, the new studio for Nickelodeon founded by the show’s original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is working on the first new show since Korra in addition to the adult Gaang movie. It will be about the next Avatar after Korra, making the next Avatar an earthbender.

This is the first announcement of a new show set within that universe. Avatar News speculates that it will be set during a technological equivalent to our reality. This makes sense if Avatars live approximately 100 years, and Korra had radio, electricity, and cars. Technically speaking, other Avatars, like Kyoshi, lived for much longer than 100 years. If the timeline turns out to be correct, it would be interesting to see how the next Avatar finds their way in a world with modern technology like computers, television, and the internet. Even further, what about space? Could the show explore the Avatar in space?

Another exciting proposition could involve the spirit world. At the end of season two of The Legend of Korra, Avatar Korra decided to leave the portal to the spirit world open in Republic City, allowing free travel between the spirit world and the regular world. What will an advanced technological level of society after Korra’s time look like with the presence of spirits?

Avatar News’s Twitter account clarified the recent announcements regarding the ATLA universe. There will be a movie first, and it will focus on Aang and the Gaang as adults. There is indeed still a Kyoshi movie in the works, but it will come later. And now, it’s become clear that along with the adult Gaang movie, there will be a new animated series focusing on the next Avatar. These are all exciting possibilities to explore.

All the questions will be answered in 2025 when the show debuts.
