Wahoo!  Five months into 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become the first of the year to hit a gross revenue of greater than $1 billion!  This achievement comes after the film made the largest opening weekend for the year thus far, making $375.6 million in the first five days and staying in the top spot for the last four weeks.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is saddled at the top spot for 2023 domestically and worldwide and is looking to stay there for a while.  Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania comes in at number 2 with a worldwide revenue of over $474 million.  John Wick: Chapter 4 measures in with just over $402 million, and Creed III with $272 million all as of May 1st.  Time will tell, as there are large titles that have recently come out and are still to come; however, The Mario Movie has made history.

The film is currently a theater exclusive.  An official release date for streaming and digital release has not been announced yet, but it can be digitally preordered on several platforms including Amazon Prime and the Microsoft Store.  Since this movie is a Universal project, it will likely be moved to Peacock for a streaming platform release.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows Italian American plumbers Mario and Luigi.  The brothers, while working on a water main leak, get sucked through a Warp Pipe and are separated along the way.  Mario must find his brother and aid the Mushroom Kingdom with the help of a familiar cast.  It’s an adventure film perfect for long-term fans and nongamers alike!
