Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is out and smashing box records like Mario smashing blocks in the iconic video game series upon which this film is based. The animated film, the sequel to 2023’s animated The Super Mario Brothers Movie, took in a massive domestic haul of $372.5 million during its debut, only slightly falling short of its predecessor’s take of $387.8 million. Foreign take-in was $182.4 million, falling just slightly short of its predecessor’s $183.2 million.

Other box office records that the film has smashed include:

Super Mario Bros is the only animated franchise to have two titles open over $350M globally.

–The sequel is the fifth biggest global opening ever for an animated film and the fourth biggest MPA animated opening of all time, behind only Zootopia 2, Moana 2, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

–Second-highest global opening for Illumination of all time, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

–Second biggest global opening for a film based on a video game, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

–Fifth biggest global opening for a Universal film of all time, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the only animated franchise to have two titles open over $170M internationally.

Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black reprise their roles from the first film as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, respectively, and the film adds the new characters of Yoshi and Princess Rosalina (introduced, appropriately enough, in the Super Mario Galaxy games). Additionally, the film will feature Fox McCloud from the iconic Starfox Nintendo game series. With additional Nintendo characters, such as Fox McCloud, as well as other characters like Donkey Kong, who appeared in the first film, can a shared Nintendo cinematic universe be far behind?
