Hannah Einbinder Comes Down On AI

Conversations on AI are getting more heated by the day, and there may not be a clear line that people can identify on where they stand on it. This came up recently in an press conference for the HBO show Hacks in which the cast and crew were discussing their fifth, and final, season. One of the stars, Hanna Einbinder, joined Jean Smart, whom people will recognize as Samantha from Sex and the City, and other series creators Paul Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello in voicing their opinions on AI.
Einbinder, though, seemed to have the harshest words for AI content and its users. Referring to the people who make AI “art” are losers, no one likes them, and they want to be cool but never will be. She stated that she would like to “put your head in the toilet and flush.” It garnered some laughs from the crowd, and maybe a little pushback from some of the creators, whom she claimed were ok and not included in her targeted jibe. The real target of her jibe seemed to be the tech “bros” who are pushing AI everywhere.

Ultimately, the panel expressed their frustrations and fears about the growing use of AI in the arts. Jean Smart lamented about the growing unease and disbelief about what people see on their screens because they can’t ascertain what is real and what is AI, as well as how it’s affecting their roles as parents and protecting their children. Downs and Statsky specifically brought up an episode in this coming season that doesn’t hold back on AI, and that was a deliberate move by the writers to place their flag in the ground and take a stand.
Season 5 of Hacks premieres April 10 on HBO.
