‘The Mandalorian’ Director Teases MandoVerse Crossover Event

Jon Favreau

The Mandalorian took the internet by storm when it was first released. From the action of a bounty hunter on a mission to the cuteness of Baby Yoda (Grogu), fans old and new found something that had them hooked. Not only did the show build upon the fanbase, but it also ushered in a new era of lore. This series has founded the MandoVerse, christened by Star Wars president Kathleen Kennedy in 2020.

You may be wondering what exactly the MandoVerse is. This is a universe built by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni and centered around our main character, Mandalorian, Din Djarin. It extends to characters like Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka in her upcoming namesake series, keeping things mostly separated but interconnected all the same. That separation won’t be maintained forever, a crossover event is in the works and one of the creators has finally revealed some information about it.

During Star Wars Celebration, director and writer Jon Favreau gave a hint at this epic crossover and the direction the overarching project was taking. In the current projects, he indicated the connections were going to get stronger, stating:

“There’s a lot going on now, now that Dave [Filoni’s] really drilling down on Ahsoka. And you know as much as it’s exciting to explore that character as we get deeper into characters that have connections with other characters of importance, the storylines inevitably become more political and more significant alongside pre-existing Star Wars, especially the stuff that Dave’s worked on in animation.”

With the arrival of Ahsoka, it seems storylines are going to start really coming together across the board. When you have multiple tie-ins, however, communication becomes all the more important between writers and directors of the different projects. Continuity is key, and Favreau acknowledges this:

“So little by little I think more will emerge. And as I’m writing and other filmmakers and producers are writing we have to start communicating about how all of this begins to affect one another. Because you don’t want movies that are existing within the same time frames to ignore one another.”

Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni

Filoni and Favreau have quite a hand in the latest shows, all in the relevant timeline at least. Planting plot points and conflict-resolution lines would be easy to start if they haven’t already been doing so. Before ending the interview with a vague all-will-be-revealed statement, Favreau mentions:

“And by Dave and I being involved with all the show within this timeframe, we could start to make everything have connection points that inevitably lead to conflicts and resolution.”

An epic crossover of this magnitude takes time, as we’ve seen in long-term projects like The Avengers and the MCU. Many strings need to be tied together and many storylines need to reasonably cross. Now that a foundation for the MandoVerse has been established, more strings will likely begin to crop up. Favreau and Filoni know what they’re doing and have proven their skills in storytelling time and time again.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

From what we know about Ahsoka at the moment, a tie-in to Star Wars Rebels is solidly coming. One of the main antagonists from the series, Grand Admiral Thrawn, could definitely take things in a “political” direction as Favreau hinted at. Favreau also hinted that Filoni’s past animation work will be coming more into play, and considering he was one of the executive producers for Rebels, it seems all the more likely that the past plot will become more connected once again.

Ahsoka

In her season 2 appearance in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka threatens Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth for information about his whereabouts. This not only confirms that Thrawn exists in some capacity a decade after his fate was thrown up in the air, but could also be an indication of where the Togruta’s storyline is headed. Nothing can be confidently confirmed at the moment, though.

Star Wars fans are left with a lot of speculation for now. Release dates and further hints are withheld for this massive crossover, so all we can do is wait. We can wait, and rewatch the shows that have already been released to look for possible clues.
