Get out your accordions, because we have an announcement: “Weird Al” Yankovic is coming to Broadway. Seaview Productions is producing Dare to be Stupid, a musical play featuring Yankovic’s music. Yankovic is writing alongside Scott Brown and Anthony King, the minds behind Gutenberg! The Musical! and the Beetlejuice adaptation, with Tony Award winner Alex Timbers to direct. Songs included are “White & Nerdy,” “Amish Paradise,” “Eat It,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” and “Like a Surgeon”, among others. Though it’s not been confirmed, “Dare to be Stupid” is almost certainly going to be included among the “other” songs.
Dare to be Stupid comes just a few years after Weird: The Al Yankovic story, a spoof of music biopics. Mr. Yankovic said of the upcoming play, “Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community. Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.” Though we know he’s joking, we can’t help but feel there’s a bit of truth to this. Fans are sure to check out this project when it releases sometime in the future. When? We’ll let you know when we find out.
