Writers In Talks For Live-Action 'Princess And The Frog' Tiana Movie

Colman Domingo and Robert O’Hara are in talks to write a live-action Princess and the Frog movie. The film, which is currently in development, is being framed less as an adaptation of the original animated movies and more as a spin-off; think less The Lion King and more Maleficent to Sleeping Beauty. What angle it will take with the original story remains to be seen, though they are eyeing some well-known writers for the project. Colman Domingo wrote a variety of plays, including (the book for) Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, Dot, Wild With Happy, A Boy and His Soul, and Up Jumped Springtime, in addition to co-producing Tony award-winning Fat Ham, based on Hamlet. Robert O’Hara directed Slave Play, which was nominated for another Tony.
This news comes over a year after the cancellation of Tiana, a Disney+ series focused on Tiana herself. It remains to be seen if, or how much, that project will influence this one. Meanwhile, this comes after the disappointing gross of Moana, so it’s likely Disney will be moving away from pure remakes like Cinderella or The Jungle Book. We will be keeping an eye on this project to see what happens when and if it makes it to release.
