Are There Too Many Characters In 'Avengers: Doomsday'?

As the MCU keeps getting bigger and bigger, it’s become increasingly thought that perhaps superhero fatigue might be driving otherwise dedicated fans away. Perhaps there is no larger sign of the over-inflation of superhero movies, and the number of actors in them, than the cast list in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel even made a video to announce the cast list.

The list of cast members is extremely long. As most fans know by now, it has Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man, returning as Victor Von Doom (Dr. Doom). Other actors who have long established themselves in the MCU include Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Paul Rudd (Antman), Sebastian Stan (Bucky), and Tom Hiddleton (Loki). Others who have appeared in previous Marvel movies include Florence Pugh (Yelena), Danny Ramirez (Joaquín Torres / Falcon), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Tenoch Huerta (Namor), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast).

Grammer’s Beast, who also appeared in the post-credit scene in The Marvels, isn’t the only one from the live-action X-Men movies who will be reprising their role. Also returning are Lewis Pullman (Sentry), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier / Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops).

Also each member of the Fantastic 4 from the upcoming movie, Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing) and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) will also all be appearing. It should also be noted that Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine, will also be reprising his role.

Those are also the only ones announced so far. We can speculate all day as to who else might show up. Spectrum appeared in the scene of The Marvels with Beast, so it's possible she might also appear. Both her co-stars in that movie, Captain Marvel and Miss Marvel, are also still around, so they might make an appearance. So might Hulk, She-Hulk, Skar, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, Kate Bishop, Dr. Strange, Wong, Spider-Man, and The Guardians Of The Galaxy. Tatum's appearance also leaves open the door for the other cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine, which include Elektra, Blade, and X-23, as well as Deadpool and Wolverine themselves, and the entire gang from the Deadpool movies, as they are considered MCU canon now. Also, that’s just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, there’s certainly more. Not to mention the fact that there will almost certainly be some new faces added to the mix

So, after providing you with a list of names and some speculation, we have to ask the question: Is it too much? While both Infinity War and Endgame were able to juggle plenty of characters, it's no guarantee that this is something that can be done in every movie. Each of those movies is an absolute masterpiece, and while it’s certainly possible that Doomsday will be able to replicate that success, it’s far from a guarantee. Also, many of the characters in Doomsday, while having previously appeared in other movies, are not “officially” part of the MCU yet (such as the X-Men), and will need time to introduce them to the universe. Also, many of these characters have only appeared in 1 or 2 movies, many of them in more bit roles, and have yet to interact with most of the other cast, meaning that character dynamics will need to be established.  Having plenty of characters means that each character you want to give screen time, and an arc to, means you need to take screen time away from at least one other. Sure, many of these will only take a scene or two each, but when you need to do this for so many characters, things add up fast. Simply put, stuffing in so many characters might lead to there not being enough time for all of them. While some of these appearances will almost certainly be just cameos, there’s still plenty of characters fighting each other for screen time.

What this will likely come down to, is the ability for the writers to have multiple groups of characters developed at one (ie can they write a scene where a lot of the X-Men characters all receive development). And that is something we’re just going to have to wait and see.
