This past weekend was Chicago Comic Entertainment Expo (C2E2) in Chicago. The convention was fun as always and I had the pleasure of meeting Freddie Prinze Jr., and Greg Baldwin, who was the second voice of Uncle Iroh in Avatar The Last Airbender. I only attended one panel this year and made sure to get there bright and early on Saturday morning so I wouldn’t miss it. This panel was the Star Wars Rebels 10-year-anniversary panel. It featured the entire cast, minus Taylor Gray, who had to cancel his appearance. It was also the first time the cast met Lars Mikkelsen (Thrawn) in person, as he did all of his recording work in Denmark. The panel was entertaining and interesting, so here are some highlights from the panel.

How Does The Love From The Fans Feel After 10 Years?

They all agreed that they appreciate the love they have received and what Rebels has received. They also said how they love meeting fans in person, and it makes that love all the more real. Vanessa Marshall (Hera Syndulla) tells a story about how she lost her bags in the airport once, and a fan came over and helped her out. She says “That is what the Star Wars family is”.

When Did You Figure Out That It Was Star Wars?

Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kanan Jarrus) said he knew right away. He saw the word “sunsword” in the script he was reading, and figured it out pretty fast. Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren) said she didn’t know it was Star Wars until someone told her, but that she could’ve figured it out, but didn’t. Steve Blume (Zeb Orrelios) was told to go to a house, and when he saw the word “stormtrooper” he freaked out. Vanessa Marshall also saw the word “sunsword” and knew how to use that in her audition, but didn’t know for sure it was Star Wars until she met Dave Filoni. Freddie then lovingly insults Dave Filoni’s cowboy hat, and says that it is “not cowboy to wear it inside”. Lars didn’t know until the first session, but within 10 minutes, he and Dave Filoni hit it off, and it worked out.

Did They Record Alone?

Every session was recorded together, including guest stars, except for Lars Mikkelsen. This allowed them to form close bonds with one another. Vanessa is the “space mom” of the group and always has the snacks, and a cardigan if you are cold. Freddie is the “space dad” and was the one to make sure everything was in order. Steve says he was the one to make the weird noises in the group. Dave Filoni would be there often and would teach them to pronounce certain words correctly, and just chat.

Any Scene That Stands Out?

Lars says when Thrawn talks about “knowing your enemy”. Tiya said “Trials Of The Darksaber”, because it allowed them to be free, and go places they hadn’t been before. She also says how everyone else was sent home, and it would just be her and Freddie recording in the booth, which made it more special. Freddie says he didn’t know that’s what the episode was called, as he’s never read a title page for any project he’s been in. Steve had three moments for Zeb, the first was when he stole the firefighter, and drove it with his feet, when he had to become Joopa bait, and the day on the moon with Kallus. Vanessa says for her it was when Hera got to fly the B-wing. She said it was a personal moment for her, as her dad was a pilot, so she could relate it to real life.

In The Past 10 Years, How Has Star Wars Changed Your Life?

Vanessa makes a joke about “never being alone in baggage claim”. She also mentions the bond between her and her castmates, and just getting to be a part of the Star Wars universe as a whole. She also revealed that she likes to have the 501st arrest them at the end of panels. Freddie says he is still in contact with all of his co-stars, which doesn’t happen often. Steve will get patches and he saves every one of them. He appreciates the 501st being a global organization because it feels like a family worldwide. Lars says it’s amazing, and he loves the embrace of the fans.

Any Advice When It Comes To Voice Acting?

Freddie says how he hasn’t done as much as Steve has, but voice acting is acting, and it should be an even playing field for all actors. He says to visit Steve’s website. Steve talks about his site and says he has a free masterclass. Everything you would need to know about voice acting is on there. They also mention Dee Bradley Baker’s site as well.

The Rebels panel was an hour long, so it was hard to incorporate everything. It gave some great background as to what was going on during the filming of the show. The panel room was full, and it was great to see the love fans have for the show, even 10 years later.
