Lucasfilm has a new Chief Creative Officer and it’s a name that is familiar to many Star Wars fans, Dave Filoni. This is a big deal for the hat-wearing Star Wars fan who began his Lucasfilm career making an animated series with the creator himself, George Lucas. The question for fans of the Star Wars franchise is, what exactly does this mean for the galaxy far, far away, and the company at large? What does the Chief Creative Officer mean regarding a corporate hierarchy and the franchise’s future? Let us dive deeply into Filoni’s new job from creative to executive.

A Lucasfilm Kevin Fiege?

Many fans have speculated if this new role will make Filoni the new Kevin Feige of Lucasfilm. The answer is a resounding, NO! While Kevin Feige is the Chief Creative Officer of Marvel and the president, that job over at Lucasfilm still resides with Kathleen Kennedy. In fact, in the articles written about Dave’s promotion they mentioned that Carrie Beck has also been promoted to greenlight and bring in talent that Dave will then be allowed to guide during the development process. Filoni though will have oversight on the narrative of Star Wars, helping creatives ensure that whatever story they want to tell fits within the wider tapestry of the Star Wars universe. Filoni may be in a higher position but it would seem that his rank does not make him necessarily a full-on executive where he is hiring and firing people. That power still resides with Kathleen Kennedy and Carrie Beck who is bringing on creatives to add their voice to the Star Wars galaxy.

Creative Leadership

Many companies have Chief Creative Officers, especially if they are big production companies that are in charge of one or several IPs. In most cases, it is the highest creative post in a company, mostly in charge of ensuring the integrity of the brand or IP that the company is known for making. They are in charge of directing creative output and ensuring cohesion between the various projects in one form or another.

In Filoni’s case being Chief Creative Officer means that Filoni will have much purview over any Star Wars projects starting from inception to it hitting the screen. Of course, that does not mean he is micromanaging the day-to-day Star Wars projects or telling creatives what to write. In many ways, this is about themes and ensuring that everything in the Star Wars universe fits within a united thematic premise that can bind the franchise together even if the plot points themselves do not.

This means that Filoni will be helping creatives, getting them to make the best version of their films they can. He will be there to help get a writer to focus not just on the fun action sequences but also on the deeper themes and ideas that make a Star Wars story something more than just an action blockbuster movie. Filoni himself had said that seeks to guide creatives, not tell them what to do, just like George guided him during his tenure as the head of The Clone Wars many years ago.

Star Wars’s future is looking bright with upcoming shows and hopefully movies on the horizon, it seems that Kathleen Kennedy is preparing the groundwork necessary for this future. With her as a producer, Carrie Beck bringing in talent, and Filoni as CCO, she has an A+ team in place to guide the Star Wars franchises into the future. The galaxy far, far away is about to expand and hopefully bring with it the same deep thematic intrigue and storytelling that made us all fans of those films so many years ago.
