Dave Filoni Says Ground Work Has Been Laid Over The Years To Prepare For What's To Come

Since the reveal at Celebration, speculation has surrounded Dave Filoni’s movie, release date unknown. There are some things known about it. For one, it will be a “culminating” event, supposedly tying together the current slate of TV shows, so look for a good chunk of characters from those shows. It will be entirely Filoni’s baby, which will be a huge thing for him given he’s worked solely in television and animation since Lucas brought him on to Clone Wars.

Recently, in an interview with Empire, Filoni gave readers a little more information, if you can call it that. “The way I look at it, there are [small] stories, and then there’s the big story of the day, too. A New Hope, Empire, and Return Of The Jedi tell the important parts of the tale that really define the history of the period. There are all kinds of sub-stories underneath that. We’ve been building all these small stories,” he said to Empire at Celebration in response to a question about it being a culmination. Filoni adds, “To me, a theatrical experience has to have a big idea – a monumental moment in the time period that changes what’s happening.”

All these shows are laying the early groundwork for what he wants to accomplish in his movie. With the big visual reveal of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka trailer, it’s assumed that the big bad for the movie will be Thrawn, but that has not been confirmed. It’s a strong link that tethers the “small things” to his movie, especially after Thrawn has been mentioned twice in The Mandalorian, and it’s known that he’s the focus of Ahsoka’s quest in the show bearing her name. There’s also the link to Mount Tantiss that’s another Legends resurrection like Thrawn himself, and the two were closely linked in Legends.

“There are little things along the way that I’ve built across different mediums, all in preparation for things that come later,” Filoni commented, rather cryptically. He jokingly mused that he has ideas, but he won’t say what they are. Either way, with all the characters he’s had a hand in over the last few years, the movie is taking early shape as something to be certainly excited for.
