“I’m not crying, you’re crying!” This was the emotional response of many to the season 2 finale of the insanely popular Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Fans were on the edge of their seats by that last scene when Luke Skywalker showed up all Vader style in the sinister darkness armed with his iconic green lightsaber and saved the day. And we all watched as Din Djarin did the fatherly thing and sent the child off to fulfill his destiny to train as a Jedi. Fans were perplexed as to what this would mean for the series. Was this the last time we would see our beloved Grogu? What would become of Din? Only time would tell. Which according to Jon Favreau was the main reason for them to reunite in The Book of Boba Fett.

The Book of Boba Fett allowed fans the opportunity to see the star of everyone’s favorite internet memes and his gruff Mandalorian father figure separately. It essentially allowed time to pass and for the storytellers to show more of their story before their paths were to intertwine once again. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni sat down recently in an interview with EMPIRE and discussed the wisdom in utilizing part of The Book of Boba Fett’s storyline to showcase how these character’s paths appeared to take them toward different destinies only for them to realize that they needed each other and reunite. Favreau explained saying, “We couldn’t just hit a hard reset.” He went on to note, “It’s going to be interesting to see how this unfolds for people who may not have seen The Book of Boba Fett. But I think The Book of Boba Fett offered time to pass.” Both the characters, as well as the viewers, were allowed the opportunity to realize that Mando and Grogu are better together.  Favreau said that doing the reunion this way made sense as “them coming back together was a really good plot point that allows us to jump back into Season 3 while maintaining the central relationship.”

Fans were able to be the fly on the wall to see firsthand how Grogu would grow during his training and how well he related to Luke. Essentially this view of him outside of his paternal relationship with Mando allowed fans not only to learn some of his backstories but to bear witness to more of his force sensitivity and further develop his character.

Favreau made note of this in his interview. “Just because this kid has the potential and had training, does he belong away from the Mandalorian? I saw it more like Paper Moon, where the whole thing is about delivering the kid to the blood relative, only to realize that, whether genetically through her father or just through bonding, Tatum O’Neal has to end up with Ryan O’Neal. That ending feels really good to me. And this little kid [Grogu] is given a decision to choose. And the kid chooses the emotional relationship and wants to be with the Mandalorian, passing up Yoda’s lightsaber. Part of you wants to see him develop in that way, and part the other.”

Fans have learned from these stories more about the world-building and wide range of interesting characters throughout the Star Wars universe. One thing that stands out, in particular, is the juxtaposition between Jedi and Mandalorian, which only serves to enrich the relationship between these two characters.

Favreau pointed out, “You have this interesting character who has Jedi training to some extent, Force abilities, but also is joining the Mandalorian culture, which we’ve established is something that you can opt into. It demands a lot, it offers a lot” In the scene in The Book of Boba Fett where The Armorer makes the tiny Grogu-sized chainmail we all  collectively said “awe!” EMPIRE signed off by suggesting that fans get to see Grogu in his Beskar chainmail. We second that, yes – please!

The Mandalorian Season 3 is expected to be released on Disney+ on March 1!
