The Marvels is a delightful installment within this new phase of the MCU. The movie is short, sweet, and will make you laugh. It's definitely one of the crazier Marvel movies, as it gave us a musical scene, and many, many cats. It's a true comic book movie in every sense of the word and even feels like the early days of the MCU and is an utter joy to watch.

Carol destroying the Supreme Intelligence, had some consequences, that she is now trying to fix. The villain is a Kree, named Dar-Benn who is out for revenge and wants to fix her home planet of Hala, which was wrecked after the Supreme Intelligence was destroyed. She goes after everything Carol has loved to reach her goals.  In order to fix her planet, she opens jump points, that affect the Marvels powers. Carol becomes intertwined with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, as every time they use their powers, they switch places. Eventually, they form a team, to defeat Dar-Benn and close the jump points she has opened.

The three main women have wonderful chemistry. From the beginning, they work well together as a team. By the end of the movie, they have become like a family, and it's great to see them become so close.  None of them upstage each other, and they all get to have their “superhero moment”. I have always loved Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, and I think this is her best portrayal of the character yet. Carol Danvers is not as closed off as she once was, and is much more comfortable working in a team. She even admits that she enjoys the company.  Teyonah Parris is great as Monica Rambeau and I love that we get to see her utilize her powers to their full potential during this movie. For me though, the standout of this film is Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel. She was wonderful in the television show and brings that same heart and humor to the movie. Kamala is starstruck, and it’s great to see how much she grows throughout the movie. Kamala’s family was a big hit in Ms. Marvel, which is no different in this movie. They add a comedic element to the film, while at the same time, they end up giving us some of the most emotional moments as well.

My biggest issue with the film is the length. While I always appreciate shorter films, I think this one would have benefitted from a slightly longer runtime, even just 15 minutes more. The villain definitely could’ve been fleshed out a bit more.  While the film gives some background as to who Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau are, some fans who have not watched the MCU shows could be a bit lost.

The fight sequences were very fun, especially closer to the beginning of the movie, when they kept teleporting to each other's fights. It was wonderful to see them use their different powers seamlessly during a fight, later in the movie. Their new costumes look incredible, and my favorite was Captain Marvel’s dress she wore at one point. The special effects in Marvel films are never amazing, but the effects in this one were excellent, especially regarding their powers. The humor was well-placed and funny. We were introduced to many new flerkens, who are as adorable as ever, and it was great to see Nick Fury once again.

Without spoiling anything, let's just say that the MCU has come full circle, and it's time to welcome a new, younger generation of heroes. As an MCU fan from the start, I am excited to see where this next phase of the franchise goes.

Higher, Further, Faster, Together.
