7 Hutts You Might Not Know About

With the rumor, and now confirmation, of the live action appearance of Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian and Grogu after a great deal of mystery and speculation from fans as to the once little Hutt’s fate, CultureSlate thought it was time to take stock of the other Hutts introduced to canon over the years. For such big beings, a few have surely slipped through the cracks of notice by fans, many representing unique visuals and focuses among the Hutt species. Not all of them are criminals either, though this mold is far harder to break. Regardless, here are seven Hutts we think Star Wars fans might not know about.

7. Sutha

This intermediary in service to Jabba the Hutt has only briefly appeared in canon, but played important roles on both occasions. Shortly after the Empire and the Hutt Cartel struck up a new arrangement in the wake of the destruction of the first Death Star, Sutha oversaw the loading of valuable wealth taken from one of the Hutt’s competitors, the Son-tuul Pride. They had been devastated at the hand of Darth Vader as part of the new deal with the Hutts, but little did Sutha know Vader had tasked Doctor Aphra with stealing the haul for his own purposes. Later, Aphra and Sutha’s paths crossed again when he served as a representative for Jabba at Aphra’s auction of the Rur Crystal. While initially hostile to the Pride, which had also shown up, he and the Pride’s leader came to an understanding about pooling their resources.

However, an insane Eternal Rur broke free with some help from 0-0-0 and began to massacre the auction’s attendees. Sutha survived and later became a living shield for Aphra against his will when she threatened him at blasterpoint. Upon reaching their destination, Sutha was barely able to issue a threat against the Doctor’s life when he was suddenly shot dead by a stray blaster bolt from an ongoing firefight. His story is brief, but his look stands out among the various canon Hutts, and his role in service to Jabba makes him unique in a galaxy where we’ve often only seen Hutts out for themselves. Such deference to another is interesting, and exploring how it happened could make for an intriguing narrative.

6. Bulcha

Bulcha first appeared in the second season of Young Jedi Adventures, and could also appear in the upcoming Season 3. Considered a ruthless crime lord in the Tenoo sector, he appeared to have notable connections involving droids. He first served as a supplier of heavy security droids to the Ganguls after they acquired a band for him, and later sent a host of his own droids to attack the Tenoo Jedi Temple while most of the Jedi were away as he hunted for Ace Kallisto and her droid JNX-09. He was thwarted in acquiring his band, and most of his droids were destroyed in his invasion of the Jedi Temple. He was not arrested, but he now has a grudge against Kai Brightstar for the Youngling’s efforts in thwarting his attack on the Temple. It will be interesting to see Bulcha’s role in the show’s third season, as with the Ganguls on the backfoot following the end of Season 2, they might need some droid reinforcements.

5. Churo

Introduced in Phase 3 of The High Republic, Churo is an incredibly unorthodox Hutt, as he lacks any interest in criminal enterprises, scheming, and eating meat. Instead, he lived his life as a vegetarian, and had a great love of the natural world with a particular fondness for the creepy-crawlies of the galaxy. However, his sister Dahara always tried to push him to act more like would be expected of him, and took him on a mission to steal a unique weapon from the Nihil. The weapon turned out to be Nameless eggs, and in the ensuing adventure, Churo met several young Jedi and Zenny Greylark. He later went on a mission to try and find a mystical plant to heal his homeworld, Nal Hutta, from the corruption of the defeated Drengir, which had turned the beautiful, clear, and bright swamps into a dim and dark mire. He found his prize, but realizing that its removal would doom the world it grew on, he left it where it was, resolving to find other ways to help his homeworld.

His most recent adventure took place shortly after the fall of the Stormwall and the end of the Nihil threat. Now apprenticed to Shani Doctor Glenna Kip, he ended up drawn into another Hutt-related scheme and encountered his sister, a concerning turn given he was meant to never get in contact with his family again. But, finding his confidence, he was able to arrange an understanding that avoided bloodshed on the planet of Aricho. Churo is a fascinating and very unique Hutt who we hope we see more of in coming years. Given how long Hutts can live, it would be great to see stories set in the Sequel Trilogy or elsewhere of this biologist Hutt, living a quirky but fulfilling life.

4. Vranki

Speaking of the Sequel Trilogy, the only Hutt to get a strong focus in content related to this era was Vranki the Blue. A Hutt who professed to be different from all the other Hutts, he ran a luxurious casino space station near an asteroid belt that served as a racing course. He briefly had Hype Fazon in his stable of racers, but Hype ultimately left. Vranki, though, was just like many other Hutts, and took to cheating with droid racers and a rigged track (though he might have always been rigging things even back in Hype’s day). While Vranki blames the casino’s slow business on the return of the First Order, and his patrons instead preferring Canto Bight, it also stands to reason that his reputation as a cheater led big racers to stay away from his venue, and thus rob it of its popularity.

If such a reputation existed, it hadn’t reached back to Hype on the Colossus, who diverted the refugee refueling platform to the casino as a way for him and the Aces to earn money for supplies through racing. Drawn into a crooked deal with Vranki, the Colossus team eventually came out on top, leaving with substantial winnings while Vranki whinged and implored them to keep playing. While Vranki was clearly a sore loser, he wasn’t an overly vindictive one as he did allow everyone from the Colossus to leave after their deal was concluded. Maybe deep, deep down, some part of Vranki IS different from his fellow Hutts.

3. Myarga

Myarga Anjiliac Atirue was a Hutt warlord in charge of “collections” during the High Republic. A warrior with considerable forces at her back, Myarga first appeared in canon during Marvel’s The High Republic 2021 comic run, seeking to collect on a debt incurred by the people of Sedri Minor, planning to put them under “Hutt protection” due to an arrangement with their crooked leader. However, Avar Kriss intervened and informed Myarga of the greater threat, the Drengir, causing an alliance to form between the Republic and the Hutts. Avar would continue to fight with Myarga’s forces, battling the Drengir at various locations across the galaxy, before they converged on the Drengir homeworld of Mulita.

The Jedi were ultimately able to cut through the Drengir defenses and use the Great Progenitor’s attempt to control Avar Kriss to instead isolate the matriarch being from others in the Drengir Root-Mind network. While the Jedi captured the massive being in a containment field, Myarga demanded to be allowed to kill her, which the Jedi refused. This immediately ended the alliance between the two factions. Myarga was later captured and tortured by the Nihil as their power surged in the wake of the destruction of the Republic Fair. Encountering the Jedi Keeve Trennis undercover within the Nihil, Myarga quickly revealed Keeve’s true identity to her captors. The Nihil had little thanks to offer, as Lourna Dee then executed Myarga, ending the Hutt warrior’s life. While savage and cruel, Myarga was still a formidable Hutt, engaged in tactics and warfare over criminal enterprise. If we see stories set between Phases 1 and 2 of The High Republic, or other stories exploring that brief period of alliance, Myarga will make an appearance.

2. Bokku

One of the few Hutts on this list to be a traitor to the Hutt Cartel, Bokku currently has a brief story in canon, but one with a profound impact. A young Hutt, Bokku served on the Hutt Council, though it is not clear which clan of the Cartel he represented. Physically large, but dense with muscle and possessing noticeably bulky arms, Bokku was nevertheless cowed into the service of Darth Vader as the Sith Lord pursued the carbonite slab of Han Solo after news leaked about its theft from Boba Fett. He wanted to use the frozen form of Luke’s close friend as a lure to make his son face him again after their confrontation on Cloud City. Bokku did not know this, but secretly unknown to Vader at the time, he had already turned on the Hutts. What was one more secret master?

He followed Vader’s orders to bid on the carbonite slab himself at the lavish auction hosted by Lady Qi’ra, but when the Empire swept in, led by Vader, humiliating Bokku, he used his powers of persuasion to convince the other members of the Hutt Council that losing Han Solo was a personal slight. Jabba had already left, content to let the Empire have Solo in this instance, but without his oversight, the other Cartel leaders made the foolish move of attacking the Imperial ships in orbit. Vader, in pursuit of Luke in a dogfight, was forced by Darth Sidious to turn around and deal with the Hutts. Slaughtering his way through the Hutt flagship, Vader came upon Bokku, at which point the Hutt revealed his true allegiance. He was a believer in Crimson Dawn and Qi’ra’s cause, which sought a more equal galaxy. Vader did not let the Hutt speak further and cut him down like he had all of the other council members present, ending Bokku’s time in the galaxy. Exploring his past and reasons for siding with Qi’ra would make for a fascinating story, but as he stands, he is only the second buff Hutt on our list…

1. Grakkus

Grakkus in his younger years and following 30+ years of imprisonment,

The first would be Grakkus, one of the first Hutts introduced into Star Wars canon with a history that has slowly expanded over the years. Incredibly physically fit, and in possession of mechanical legs that allowed him to quickly crawl around, Grakkus is unique among the Hutts for his intense focus on the Jedi. Exactly why he has made collecting their art, objects, and history his own intense hobby is unknown, but he was prolific with it by the time of the Clone Wars. He even attended an auction looking to buy a captured Jedi Padawan, only to have Darth Maul and his operatives snatch the young woman away from the auction’s winners.

During the reign of the Empire, Grakkus’ collection became illegal, but with the fall of the Jedi Order, his collection also grew even more expansive. It seems Grakkus paid for all of these objects, and his considerable security, by hosting incredibly popular gladiatorial games on Nar Shaddaa, which were eventually infiltrated by an agent of Darth Vader, Sergeant Kreel of Task Force 99, who served as a trainer for the different gladiators. Shortly after A New Hope, Luke fell into Grakkus’ clutches, but when his friends arrived to save him, the chaos led to Grakkus being arrested by the Empire, with his collection of relics seized.

Many years later, still imprisoned though now under the auspices of the New Republic, Grakkus’ knowledge of the Jedi was his greatest asset as his impressive body had slowly faded. The worn Hutt had aided Lor San Tekka in times past, and when the Resistance sought Lor out to help find a now-missing Luke, Grakkus proved a valuable connection. However, he would only help the side that freed him from prison, as the First Order was already involved in planning an escape attempt. Poe and his team won the day in the end, and Grakkus did send them valuable information, but the incident tarnished the reputation of the Resistance. Despite that, Grakkus is truly a unique Hutt, and his imposing physical stature was commented on at Star Wars Celebration by those bringing Rotta to live action. His body shape may be the one used as a reference for how Rotta will appear, but regardless, we hope that we continue to learn plenty more about this unique collector.
