Conan the Barbarian will be coming back to the screens in a new adaptation from Star Wars: The Clone Wars producer, Genndy Tartakovsky. He will be partnering with Cartoon Network and Prime Video to bring an animated reboot to the screens. The announcement was made at Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where the animator stated that he’d “been trying to develop ‘Conan’ since 2008, but the world was not ready.

Genndy Tartakovsky has worked on Dexter’s Laboratory, as well as Adult Swim’s Samurai Jack and Primal, and says he is a big fan of the original Robert E. Howard source material. This sounds like a promising start, Conan’s IP has been plagued by adaptations that didn’t live up to expectations. A prime example is the 2011 Jason Momoa version that has a dismal 30% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the cult Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan movies didn’t impress movie executives enough for the third film in the series to be made.

Despite the past failures of others, Genndy Tartakovsky sounds optimistic. “I have been so inspired by the books written by Robert E. Howard, whose work I have a personal connection with. So far I feel super excited. This is the only IP I’ve worked on other than ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ and I think it’s going to be something special.” Let’s hope he’s right. We’ll keep you updated on the news as it comes.
