Excitement? Dread? You name it! One of the most iconic television shows of the 21st century is returning to television! It’s officially been announced that a revival of Glee is officially a go at Disney+ and Hulu!
From the creative minds of Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk, Glee was a musical dramedy following the high school glee club, New Directions, as they navigate the complexities of romance, coming-of-age, sexuality, and the everyday experiences of life in high school. While the first two seasons garnered widespread acclaim for their musical performances, acting, direction, and seamless blend of humor and drama, the show's reception became more polarized from season 3 through its finale. Although ratings dipped following the third season, the series ran for six seasons from May 19th, 2009, to March 20th, 2015. Despite lingering criticism regarding its tone, character development, and portrayal of heavy subject matter, the series has sustained consistent popularity, a passionate, loyal fan base, and impressive music sales and streaming numbers.
Following years of rumors, the project’s development was officially confirmed by trade outlets on Wednesday. Although no cast or crew members are locked in, Ryan Murphy is expected to return for writing and directing duties. In the days that followed, reports confirmed that Lea Michele, Heather Morris, and Chord Overstreet are in talks to reprise their roles as Rachel Berry, Brittany S. Pierce, and Sam Evans, while Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina Cohen-Chang), Kevin McHale (Artie Abrams), Dianna Agron (Quinn Fabray), and Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) have all dropped hints about coming back. Throughout the year, Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang), Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson), and Becca Tobin (Kitty Wilde) have also voiced interest in returning. Meanwhile, Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester) is reportedly not in active discussions to return, though he remains hopeful about participating.
