Counter-Strike fans received some good news this week: the long-awaited sequel to the FPS Counter-Strike 2 is officially coming this summer, and will be free to play. According to Valve, all items from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will carry over into the new game with Source 2 lighting and materials, and higher resolution. Some Global Offensive players were selected for a beta test that began yesterday as a way for Valve to judge the game’s features and search out any issues. Testers are allowed to stream and record videos of the game, so potential players can check out the new game.

Valve promises a leap forward in technology with improved visuals, tiered maps, and sub-tick updates. The company claims: "Sub-tick updates are the heart of Counter-Strike 2. Previously, the server only evaluated the world in discrete time intervals (called ticks). Thanks to Counter-Strike 2’s sub-tick update architecture, servers know the exact instant that motion starts, a shot is fired, or a ‘nade is thrown. As a result, regardless of tick rate, your moving and shooting will be equally responsive and your grenades will always land the same way."

Along with the announcement, the company released three videos explaining in depth some of the changes. Valve says a full list of features will be revealed when the game launches this summer. In the meantime, Counter-Strike players can build their inventory by collecting items in Global Offensive.
