Acclaimed composer Ludwig Göransson is known for his work on Black Panther, Oppenheimer, and Sinners, and the Academy Award-winner is back to score the next Star Wars movie. Göransson scored the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and wrote the main theme for The Book of Boba Fett. He wasn’t there for The Mandalorian Season 3, but fans definitely missed his signature Western sounds. The Swedish maestro is back again, and he discussed his work on the Mando movie with Empire. Göransson expressed his wish to return for the movie as soon as news that the project was greenlit dropped online. He sounds just as excited about it even now, after working on it, and calls it “a completely different scope.”
Göransson explains, “With the scale of this picture, and with the time that we have to work, I’m able to bring the music out in a way where it’s on a bigger scale. We have a 105-piece orchestra (an increase from the 70-piece orchestra for the series). We also have a 65-piece choir.” If that isn’t enough to excite you, then the Emmy winner’s passion for writing music for a faceless character should. Explaining what it’s like to make music for our helmeted hero, he says, “The music is essentially the facial expressions underneath the helmet. Is he smiling? Is he crying? Is he smirking? That’s what’s so fun about my job on this project.” The Mandalorian theme has become incredibly popular and iconic over a short period of time. It’s only been 6 years since the series premiered on Disney+, but while other Star Wars shows have come and gone, the Mando theme’s legend continues to grow.

This time around, however, Ludwig sounds extremely excited about Grogu as well. He reveals that Grogu “got a lot more screentime. He’s a lot more present. He’s not a little kid anymore. He’s more grown up. He’s more independent. You really get to spend some time with him and get to know him.” While he didn’t go into specifics, it sounds like he may have written a new theme for Grogu, and with his talent, he’ll create something that lasts the test of time, like the Yoda theme. Even though this interview didn’t go into whether Göransson looked at John Williams, John Powell, and Michael Giacchino for inspiration while writing music for The Mandalorian and Grogu, he admitted that “Ninety-nine percent of all film composers are into film music because of John Williams, and because of Star Wars. I feel extremely lucky that, for the journey I started on with Jon and Dave, they were looking for something completely different.” It will be interesting to see how he takes the themes he created for the series and expands on them for the big screen. Göransson’s other big score this year is for The Odyssey, so he’ll be competing against himself.
