On July 1, 2026, Sony announced it would soon discontinue production of discs for PlayStation consoles. This was met with significant backlash from PlayStation consumers and gamers in general, mourning the loss of physical media and raising concerns about what it means to own something. Despite this, the company confirmed that they are moving forward with their plans at this time. In the Q&A session following the first quarter earnings announcement for 2026, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao explained the company's choice.

Tao restated the timeline of the end of physical disc production (via VGC), “We announced that from January 2028 onwards we will no longer be manufacturing game discs, so [we announced it] one and a half years ahead.” She continued, explaining the core of this business move, “There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that digitalisation of contents overall has been progressing, that’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalisation is progressing.”

The CFO doubled down on the decision, “And so, when we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.” Sony is not backing down despite public backlash against the move. The company reportedly stands to make more from digital releases over physical copies, as there is no revenue split with a vendor nor packaging and production costs; according to IGN, Sony would see a higher revenue split from third-party licensed games as well.

Tao wrapped up by acknowledging the tumultuous opinions on the subject, carefully avoiding a positive or negative label, “To this decision we have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forward those views to us. Games are loved by many people, it’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases, and so we understand those emotions.” This decision does not go into effect until January 2028; the likelihood that the company will switch directions is not high at this time.
