One of the most iconic characters of the late 90s and early 2000s console mascot era, Spyro the Dragon, is returning to consoles next year. During the Summer Games Fest, hosted by Geoff Keighly, loads and loads of new games under development were shown, capped off by the Xbox Showcase yesterday. One game, which fans have been asking for for some time, was Spyro: A Realm Beyond.

For the uninformed, Spyro is the hero of a series of games bearing his name from the first generation of PlayStations. However, unlike other dragons, Spyro, though having wings, couldn’t fly. He could, however, glide.

They were 3D platformers on the same vein as Banjo-Kazooie, Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more. Spyro would run and glide around the Dragon Kingdom, and he could spit blasts of fire to defeat enemies. It was a popular series that led to several games and his name came to be instantly associated with the PlayStation brands as easily as Crash, Mario for Nintendo, and Sonic for SEGA.

Spyro’s new game, however, features a grown up (sort of) Spyro, who can now, actually, fly. It only took nearly 30 years (Spyro first premiered in 1998) for the little guy to learn how to fly, but he got there. According to the developers, the ground travel mechanic is still in the game, and the transition is as simple as a button push. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Spyro will be able to just go anywhere and make the game incredibly easy. Spyro will use his flame abilities, flying, and ground travel to solve puzzles and collect gems in a combination of ways.

The game is being developed by Toys for Bob, and it’s in trusted hands. Toys for Bob has been involved in numerous Spyro titles, including the 2018 remake of the original trilogy. They have such a love for the game that they brought back Tom Kenny, the original voice actor for Spyro, to voice the new game.

There’s no definitive release date announced yet, but it will launch on all major platforms in the spring of 2027.
