Restructuring efforts are underway at Sony Pictures Entertainment, with hundreds of layoffs planned across its corporate, TV, and film divisions. The cuts to staff are said to be a targeted and strategic choice to provide growth to the company rather than a simple cost-cutting measure.
Key areas where growth is expected from the layoffs include franchise strategy and brand extension (including game shows), Sony Group ecosystem connectivity (including video game adaptations), anime, experiences, next-gen content, platform-native content, and utilisation of YouTube. The restructuring will see Sony Game Show Group combined with the Game Show Network, the non-fiction division of Sony Pictures Television moved to be under TV studios president Katherine Pope, and VFX firm Pixomondo is being shuttered.
In January 2025, Ravi Ahuja took the CEO role of Sony Pictures Entertainment, following the retirement of Tony Vinciquerra. Ahuja has took to prioritising the recent acquisition of the franchise Peanuts, continuing the adaptations of PlayStation video games such as HBO’s The Last of Us and the upcoming Amazon series God of War, and further expansion of Sony TV and film universes such as Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, and The Boys.

The memo sent to staff regarding the restructuring came from Ahuja, with it stating, “Over the past year, we have sharpened our strategy and clarified where we believe the greatest opportunities exist. As we lean into those priorities, we need to operate with greater focus, speed, and alignment to strengthen our differentiated capabilities. To support out growth, we are aligning organisation with where the business is going – not where is has been. That requires changes to how we are structured and where we invest.”
The memo continues with, “With that, we are reducing roles in certain areas while increasing focus and investment in others that are most critical to our future. This means that some of our colleagues will be leaving the company. These are difficult decisions. They impact talented people who have contributed meaningfully to our work and culture. We are grateful for their contributions, and our P&O teams are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
