Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is sunsetting physical discs for the PlayStation. Starting in January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be digital only. Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, wrote on the PlayStation Blog, “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.” This announcement comes on the heels of Grand Theft Auto VI being a digital release only. Retailers will sell a game code within a traditional box.

Digital games have pros and cons. For one, they’re more convenient and can be downloaded as soon as they’re released. However, one major disadvantage is that gamers who buy digital gamers never truly own the game. What consumers buy digitally is a license to play that game, which can be revoked at any time for any reason. This is rare but not entirely uncommon. Sony’s decision seems to align with consumer trends, though, as analysts report that “80% of PlayStation software sales and 90% on XBox” are for full-game digital sales. Physical retailers are already on the decline, with GameStop closing over 1,300 stores. These trends likely led to Sony’s decision, although it was sooner than anyone expected.
