The future is here, and it’s very neon! Deadline has confirmed that Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film, Artificial, has been acquired by Neon.

The highly anticipated film centers on the firing and eventual reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as well as the AI arms race and media circuses that surrounded his ousting. Amazon-MGM was originally the distributor, intending to release it worldwide in early 2027. However, the studio dropped the project in mid-June for unknown reasons. Film fans and professional reporters have made note of Amazon’s $50 billion deal with OpenAI back in February. Trades such as Variety have speculated that the film was dropped primarily due to the film’s unflattering portrayals of real-life controversial figures such as the aforementioned Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Artificial was screened for Neon, A24, Focus Features, Netflix, and Warner Bros.’ recently-created indie label Clockwork in hopes of giving it a new home. Neon was the only distributor that didn’t pass on the film. Mubi was also in the mix at one point.

The film features an all star cast including Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Mark Rylance as George Henton, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. The cast also features Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Koch, and Billie Lourd. Founded in 2017, Neon has garnered a reputation for distributing stylish auteur-driven films. Many of their features have gone on to become Oscar winners, including Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, and Sean Baker’s Anora, which won him Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing.

While Artificial finding a home is a major victory in itself, big news lost in the shuffle was the confirmation of the film’s composer. Reports have confirmed that Grammy winning musician Damon Albarn will provide the score for the film. This will be Luca Guadagnino’s first film since Suspiria to not feature a score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, who provided the scores for Bones & All, Challengers, Queer, and After the Hunt. Albarn launched his musical journey in the late 1980s, serving as the frontman for the British rock band Blur. After a lengthy hiatus, the band reunited in 2023. In addition to Blur, Albarn is the co-creator and main musical contributor of the virtual band Gorillaz. Alongside comic artist Jamie Hewlett and eventual percussionist Remi Kabaka Jr., Gorillaz has enjoyed frequent chart success and critical acclaim since their debut in 2000. The band’s signature songs, Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc., are often considered to be amongst the greatest songs of the 21st Century. In addition to providing the score, Albarn will also write original songs for the film.

While no release date has been set as of the writing of this article, Neon confirmed Artificial will be ready for this year’s Oscar season. Stay tuned for future updates!
