'The Comebacker' Starring Tom Hanks Sets Late Summer 2027 Release

There is still no crying in baseball, it seems! Deadline has confirmed the release date for Marielle Heller and Tom Hanks’ upcoming baseball drama The Comebacker for Sony Pictures.
Adapted from a short story by Dave Eggers, the film is being hailed as a love letter to baseball, focusing on a major league pitching coach whose star hurler suffers a head injury. Tom Hanks is set to star as the coach, while the role of the hurler is intended for an "up-and-coming talent.” Heller will also write the screenplay. The Comebacker marks the second collaboration between Heller and Hanks, following 2019’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Hanks received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Fred Rogers in the film. In addition to Hanks, Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Colman Domingo and Grammy winning superstar Bad Bunny are in talks for roles.
Marielle Heller is an actress-turned-director who is best known for directing the comic book film The Diary of a Teenage Girl, the 2018 drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?, the aforementioned A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and the horror comedy Nightbitch. In the realm of acting, she’s best known for her role as Alma Wheatley in The Queen’s Gambit, which earned her a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television. Heller is also attached to direct a live-action remake of FernGully.
The Comebacker will be released on July 30th, 2027.
