The Oceans are putting together a crew! It’s officially been confirmed by the trades that Monica Barbaro, Wagner Moura, and Josh Gad will join the cast of Warner Bros.’ upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel. They join an ensemble cast led by Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper.
On television, Monica Barbaro is best known for her roles as Yael in Unreal, Assistant State's Attorney Anna Valdez in NBC's One Chicago franchise, and Emma Brunner on Netflix’s FUBAR. On the film side, she landed her first prominent role in Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick. In 2024, Barbaro had her break-out moment, playing Joan Baez in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Barbaro is set to appear in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial later this year. Wagner Moura is best known for his roles as Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos, Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Brander Lawson in Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, and Armando "Marcelo" Solimões in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Josh Gad is best known for his roles as Elder Cunningham in the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon and as the voice of Olaf on Disney’s Frozen franchise. Although Barbaro and Gad’s roles remain under wraps, reports suggest Moura will be portraying the film's villain.
The upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel has been in active development since 2022. The film is reported to center on the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean (played by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, respectively in previous films) as they attempt to pull off a heist 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. Margot Robbie will play the Oceans’ matriarch, and will produce the film via her LuckyChap Entertainment production company alongside her husband Tom Ackerley. Ryan Gosling was originally set to play the male lead, but he was later replaced by Bradley Cooper. In addition to starring, Cooper will direct (replacing previous directors Lee Isaac Chung and Jay Roach), write (replacing Carrie Solomon), and produce the film as well. The film is rumored to be titled Oceans.
The currently untitled Ocean’s Eleven prequel is set for release on June 25th, 2027.
